All assignments which follow the abbreviated letters signifying homework (

                                              WEEK 1:  Introduction to the course and Signing up for Presentations


August 20th – Tues:  Introduction to class:  syllabus, policies, presentations, texts, plagiarism
                        contract, and assignments.
                        Activating schema: course theme—what are the main issues concerning illegal drugs? 
                        Which drugs are illegal and why?  Should this change?  What are the controversies? 
                       

HW: Purchase the course materials:

Decide which book group presentation you would like to sign up next class to join: Dealing Death and Drugs

                   described at the top of page 38 and mark up Malcolm X’s “Learning to

read the section “The Writing Process” (pages 86-108).

                   section in the reader (218-278).  Apply concepts in revising Paper 4.

Review all the texts we have read for this course in preparation for the 2 1/2 hour final essay exam. 
Recommended:  create possible final exam questions for yourself which connect the works we have
read through the course theme: “
Altered Realties: The Impact and Controversies of Illegal Drugs. 
Take at least one practice essay exam before the actual final exam.  Review the advice on
Timed Writing (204-209 in reader—PODCAST 18).
