Explanation of homework layout:  All activities listed next to the date (not in bold) is what we will do in class on that day. 
All assignments which follow the abbreviated letters signifying homework (
HW) will be due the following class. 


                                    WEEK 1:  Introduction to course



August 19th – Tues:  Introduction to class:  syllabus, policies, texts, honesty pledge, and assignments
                        Activating schema (in Rhetoric, page 21):
                    Course theme—Listening to the Music Inside of Us: what do you think is the importance
                        or significance of music?  What does the word music trigger in you or bring to mind? 
                        How does music affect us mentally, physically, emotionally?  How can music
                        affect/shape/influence us?  What is more important: lyrics or the instrumental
                        elements?  What are the most influential musical genres in the U.S (rock ‘n’ roll,
                        country, hip hop, classical, blues)?  How has technology changed music?

                   Chapter 1: Critical Reading and read “Habits of Highly Effective
                   Readers” (20), “Identifying Topics, Main, Major and Minor Ideas”
                   (27-28) and “Annotating” (29-33) and do the Annotating Practice
                   described at the top of page 30 and mark up the excerpt by Frederick
                   Douglass  (30-33)—due next class on 8/26.
         
                  
In Music and Culture, read Chapter 1: “The Appeal of Music” (1-31)
                   and annotate the articles as you read them.

Sept 11th – Thurs:  Workshopping outlines and thesis statements —write on your peers’

outlines and answer the questions from the 3 areas on page 133 of the reader.

Chapter 6: Evaluating Writing (183-198)

HW:  Review Chapter 6: Evaluating Writing (183-198) in preparation for workshopping next class.

Read from Chapter 4: Drafting (139-142)

Complete Paper #1 (2-4 pages), due next class: 

                        (1) Bring 4 copies of your completed, typed, double-spaced paper next class.     
                        (2) Follow MLA formatting guidelines (170-176)

                        (3) Students without papers will be asked to leave. 

                        (4) Each workshop day counts as 2 absences 

                        (5) If you do not turn a paper in on this due date, you cannot turn in the revised
                             version, due a week later, for a grade.  You cannot pass the class if you miss one of the papers.

HW: Prepare for open-book essay Midterm Exam on Thursday,
                   November 13th on Ripped. The best way to prepare for a timed
                   written exam is to PRACTICE!  There is a practice ungraded midterm
                   exam posted in WebAccess for you to use to prepare.

                   If you handwrite the exam on Nov 13th, bring lined paper, and if you
                   type it, bring a USB drive.  If you take the exam online, be sure to
                   save a back up copy of the exam.

                   I will score these in class Thursday while you are taking the quiz and
                   give them back to you the same day so you can use the advice as you
                   and your partner revise Paper 4.
       

               
PLEASE NOTE: The revision of Paper 4 is due on Monday 12/15 by midnight the
                        night BEFORE the final exam.  You cannot use a late ticket on Paper 4 and must
                        upload it by the designated due date.  No exceptions.

                                  WEEK 18:  Revision of Paper 4 & Final Exam


Dec 15th – Mon:  Upload the revision of Paper 4 by midnight in WebAccess
                        (NO LATE TICKETS CAN BE USED FOR PAPER 4)


                       
HW: Prepare for the 2 ½ hour final essay exam connecting the
                   4 course texts under the course theme—“Listening to the Music
                   Inside Us”:

                   * Review the assigned reading in the 4 course texts.
                   * Be sure your texts are thoroughly annotated.
                   * Take the practice final exam posted in WebAccess.
                   * Create your own additional final exam questions and take more
                      practice exams.
                   * Review Chapter 11: Timed Writing (In the Rhetoric, 275-285:

                   * If you handwrite the exam, bring paper or a bluebook, and if you

Dec 16th – Tues:  Final Exam (2 ½ hours)open book, open note
               
To take the exam, chose ONE of the following options on 12/16:

                (1) Take the exam on campus in the Library’s Electronic
                      Classroom—Bldg 5 from 11:10-1:40pm 
                (2) Take the exam on campus in the Library’s Electronic
                      Classroom—Bldg 5 from 2:10-4:40pm
                (3) Take the exam remotely by logging into WebAccess anytime
                      on exam day between 11am and 5pm (the latest you can log
                      in and get the full 2 ½ hours of exam time is 2:30pm)
