Fun in Golden Gate Park!! On Saturday, Sept 28th, the Puente students bonded with their mentors and each other on a trip to the Academy of Sciences. Afterwards, we had a picnic in the park (with more food than we could ever hope to eat-thanks everyone for bringing so much to share!), and we competed in pairs and teams for prizes! Jonathan and one of the Puente mentors, Maria Escobar, won Skyline mugs playing Bingo; Jeff Acidera and his mentee Robert won the tic-tac-toe toss contest and each walked away with a hooded Skyline sweatshirt; and the team of Ben, Noe, Corin, Robert, Cesar and Edmundo won the Play-doh contest by creating their artistic interpretation of what "Success" means to them.

Thank you Puente Mentors! We wanted to thank this year's Puente mentors who are so generous in giving their time in mentoring a Puente student. Their guidance and caring really make a difference in the life of a student. Thank you to…

Mark Your Calendars…

October 1st to October 14th:
Students interview mentors for WHERE paper
due Weds, October 16th

November 2nd, Saturday 8am-4pm:
UC-Puente Student Transfer/Motivational
Conference at UC Davis

Straight from the Students' Mouths: After their first meeting with their mentors, the Puente students were asked to write up what that experience was like. There's not enough room to fit all of their responses but here are some excerpts:

"I felt it was a benefit meeting my mentor because I got to meet another person on campus and it's always nice meeting new people. Another thing is, if I ever need some help or have any questions, I think he can help give me suggestions or advice"

"The experience of a mentor is good so far because I never really looked up to someone before. Overall I'm really excited about the whole experience"

"My mentor told me many things about herself that were interesting and she is very nice. She made me feel relaxed in her company and hopefully she will teach me some useful things and guide me in the right direction."

"Meeting with my mentor is one of the best experiences I've had in college so far. I really liked my mentor. She is a friendly person. We enjoyed playing together even though we didn't win anything! I'm happy having her as my mentor. She seems to be very supportive and understanding."

Motivating Our Students Towards the UC's: The Skyline Puente Program, along with twenty other community college Puente Programs, will converge at the University of California at Davis on Saturday, November 2nd for its annual Student Transfer Motivational Conference. Each year over 300 Puentista's participate in this conference which promises to motivate and empower. Students are treated to workshops; meetings with UC rep's; amazing keynote speakers; and lunch. The message that students are left with: Puentista's are welcome at the UC's!!
