Student/Mentor
Saturday Activity Selected!!
After a chaotic
brainstorm of activities the Puente students could
do with their mentors for the scheduled November
Saturday event with suggestions such as "skydiving"
and "bungee jumping" being vetoed by Rachel and
Jacquie, the students decided they would like to
invite their mentors to an afternoon of bowling at
Serra Bowl in Daly City, 3301 Junipero Serra Blvd
(ph# 650-992-3444) on Saturday, November 10th from
12-2pm. Bowling, drinks and food will be provided
courtesy of Puente. We need an exact head count for
those attending, so please RSVP to Jacquie (her
contact info is at the bottom) before Friday,
November 2nd.
A
Great Time Touring UC
Davis:
On Friday, October
12th, the Puente students toured UC Davis. Students
were presented valuable information on applying to
UCD and more. Students were also given a short tour
of the campus, as well as provided free lunch at
the UCD Coffee House. College tours are an
important part of a student's college experience.
Tours expose students to the many transfer
possibilities that are available to them. A special
thank you to Dorothy Hicks and Coleman Billingslea
from UCD for their hard work in organizing the
college tour.

Celebrates Dia de los Muertos:
Dia de los Muertos is
an event honoring the lives of our loved ones who
have passed on. Death, according to the tradition,
is seen not as an ending of life, but a
continuation of life in the spirit world. Nov 1st
(All Saint's Day) is set aside for the remembrance
of deceased infants and children, referred to as
angelitos (little angels). Nov 2nd (All Soul's Day)
is the day our deceased adult loved ones are
honored. In honor of Dia de Los Muertos two events
are being held on Thursday Nov 1st in the Gallery
Theatre. One is during the day from 12:35-1:50pm:
Playback Theatre performed by Opera Piccola. The
other is during the evening 6:30-9:30pm and is
hosted by the Puente Club: Trio Oro Enrique Reyes
will perform, and Traditional Mexican antojitos
will be served.

Student Motivational Conference at
UCSC:
On Saturday, October 27th, Puente students
from over 15 northern California Community Colleges
converged on the UC Santa Cruz campus for a day
long conference. Students attended workshops on the
various UC campuses and also workshops such as "The
Latina Woman Experience," "The Diverse Student
Panel," and "Journal Writing." The conference ended
with a dance performance by a Ballet Folklorico
group and a DJ playing banda and salsa music.
Overall, the experience was, according to the
students, FUN!!! Also, Puente students were exposed
to yet another UC campus and another transfer
campus option.

New
Friendships and the Powerful Impact of the Puente Mentors
Below are excerpts from the
Puente students who wrote about their experiences of meeting
their mentors. We would have loved to include a response
from every student but due to limited space, we could only
include a few:
"Rey really inspired me to be a graphic
designer. I had no clue what I wanted to be, but now that
Rey came in and explained everything that he does, I think I
am going to head towards a major that is or is very similar
to that. Other than that Rey also gave me a lot of advice on
how to get to the top both in work and in life
I felt
that meeting with a mentor helped me out a lot. I now have a
good idea of what I want to be. I am also glad that we had
this whole mentor project because it really does help you
understand what you are interested in career-wise. If I
didn't do it, I would have made a huge mistake and missed
out on a chance to see a true life example of a career as
well as missing out on meeting a great guy."

"Let me sum it up: I love my mentor! Marta is a great
influence and is proof that dreams do come true
she
encourages me to do well in school and to explore what it is
I really want in my heart. She is so understanding, I can't
emphasize how understanding she is as well as very positive.
She makes me feel good when I'm around her because she is so
grateful to God and so content with everything she has.
She's very happy with her life and she knows she is truly
blessed. I love that about her because she makes me feel
that I can one day accomplish all I want too."

"I'm so happy that my mentor Ray and I click together. At
first I was afraid of what I was going to talk about but Ray
was very open and cool. I think that my mentor and I will
become very good friends. I'm so happy because soon we will
go visit hospitals and he will introduce me to other
pediatricians
my mentor is the bomb!"

-- Luzmaria Maldonado
"Derrick is super cool, energetic and a very spontaneous
person
I think that not only did I meet a new person,
but I also feel like I gained a new friend
I love
having Derrick as my mentor. I love it because he's a
positive role model for me. Although he is super busy at all
times, it was very sweet of him to make time to get to know
me and meet with me. I am looking forward to spending more
time with him."

-- Yvette Guzman
"What I found inspiring about my mentor experience is that
now I have faith that I can make it in this world as a gay
professional. Laurence is walking proof that if you have the
drive and are willing to put forth a lot of effort, no
matter what anyone thinks, you can get what you want done.
Hanging with Laurence has been a completely positive
experience. I have truly enjoyed the time we spent together
and I look forward to getting to know him better with
time
I also look forward to one day becoming a mentor
myself and hopefully be as good as Laurence has been to me."

-- Sandra Aragon
"As for Alicia, I have to say that it was a pleasure, we get
along great, and I hope that she will be my mentor for a
long time, that's of course if she wants to be. I can't wait
to see Alicia again. I hope to be able to learn from her.
She gave me advice, "Always ask questions because without
asking you will get nowhere!" She's right and I hope to ask
her many questions."

-- Maria Duran
"Gabriel is an intelligent man and interesting person to get
facts about
I talked to him about a great number of
things such as history. I found out he likes soccer as well
and of course he likes one of the best teams around,
Argentina! He also doesn't accept things without questioning
their worth or validity, as I like to do for certain
subjects and things. He is an interesting man to interview
and I enjoyed every minute of it as I hope he did as
well."
..............................
-- Anthony Perez
"Each answer I received from Drewkai was long and very
clear. He was very comfortable with telling me his personal
background. We each shared stories about our past and how we
feel about certain topics. I think we both found out that we
have a lot in common. Knowing that we are both
people-persons helped us get along really well"

-- Angel Gutierrez
"Meeting with my mentor Jennifer was very beneficial in many
ways. For one, it helped me to just open up and be more
outgoing, and it also taught me how to do a successful
interview. I can say it was successful because I ended up
getting all the information needed to write a paper and she
even complimented me on the questions I asked, which made me
feel really good
I really enjoyed meeting with my
mentor. It was very informative and just a nice
experience."

-- Nicole Ojakian
"I went to Seaton Hospital where Rose has her cancer
outpatient center
in her office we talked and she
answered lots of questions for me. I liked her a lot because
she seemed to be very honest and sincere. She is down to
earth and a kind person, which I like a lot
She made me
appreciate nurses more because they work really hard and are
dedicated to their work. Lately I was thinking about going
into business instead of nursing but after I met her and
talked with her, she made me think about nursing again."
..............................
-- Raquel Guerrero
"After meeting Chris's co-workers, we went to a room where
we could talk. I found out that we have similar life
experiences. He made me feel comfortable talking to him
because he wasn't trying to talk over me or anything. He
gave me some good advice about working and about life:
"Don't let anyone tell you what you are capable of doing." I
also learned to always keep a positive attitude no matter
what and you'll get far in life."
