Puente
Statewide Conference at UC
Davis!! On
Saturday, November 2nd, Puente chartered a bus and
met up with 650, yes 650! other Puente students at
the annual Northern California Puente Motivational
Conference. Each school stood out in their matching
Puente shirts-Skyline wore dark gray t-shirts with
a design by Latino artist José de Rivera on
the back. Upon arrival, the students were first
told about all the transfer and financial aid
possibilities. Next, Skyline Puente went on a tour
of UC Davis's beautiful campus and even got to
visit the local Farmer's Market. Afterwards, we had
the treat of listening to writer Jimmy Santiago
Baca speak. He told of his struggles in overcoming
prison and illiteracy to go on to become an avid
reader and prolific writer. He encouraged the
students that they could achieve any dream they set
their minds to and that it was in their power to
create positive change in their lives and in the
lives of others. In English 100 Puente for Spring
2003, the students will get a chance to read Baca's
memoir A Place to Stand. Overall the trip to UC
Davis was very inspiring and gratifying. Want to
become a Puente mentor? Want to recommend someone
as a mentor? Don't have enough time to mentor but
you would like to be a part of Puente and its
events by becoming an "Amigo de Puente"? Contact:

Welcoming
New Puente Students for Spring 2003!!
Please let
your students know that they too can become a part
of Puente! Puente is designed to create a support
network through having a dedicated counselor and
community mentors to assist under-represented
students in transferring to four-year colleges. In
addition, students are taken to UC campuses on
tours, and they take part in other field trips in
order to strengthen their connection to the college
community. If you know a student who would benefit
from this type of program, please encourage him/her
to sign up for English 100 with Rachel Bell for
Spring 2003. The course information is as
follows:
