The
Mentor/Student Bowling
Day-fun
fun fun!!
Our Saturday bowling at
Serra Bowl on November 10th was very fun and well
attended! We weren't the most accomplished bowlers
out there, but there wasn't a dull moment
either
particularly when one mentor threw the
ball backwards rather then down the lane (duck!)
and also when one bowler made an impressive follow
through and ended up in a belly slide down the
lane. We may have thrown more gutter balls than
strikes but we had a great time! Excellent choice

Ending
the Year on a Positive Note:
We have greatly enjoyed
watching the growth of our Puente students. The
first day of class, the students seemed quiet and
perhaps unsure of what awaited them. Fifteen weeks
later, they have evolved into a confident,
outspoken, and cohesive group. Clearly, they have
formed a true Puente familia. In closing the
semester, we would like to wish our students,
mentors, and amigos de Puente a wonderful holiday
season!

Other side of December 2001 Puente
Newsletter:
Here's what
students had to say about their Puente experience:
"Let's see, I like the
whole part about becoming like a family. I see my classmates
as my second family, people I have shared many experiences
and memories
with."..........................................................................................................................................................--Luzmaria
Maldonado
"One of the most important things in Puente is getting to
know people, not only your classmates but your teachers,
counselors, and, of course, your mentor. Normally you go to
school and attend classes and that's it but in Puente it's
different."..........................................--Ivette
Guzman
"I've made a lot of friends through the program. It has also
been a great learning experience. I really liked all the
activities we did. The trip to UC Davis was fun and exciting
because it was a big campus. UC Santa Cruz was also
fun."................................................--Peter
Monrroy
"All the activities in the Puente Program were a lot of fun
and helped us get to know each other. The Student/Mentor
dinner was, for me, one of the best events because we got to
know each other outside of the classroom and we got to meet
our
mentors.".................--Luis
Santillana
"My Puente experience has been a good one. I enjoyed going
to UC Davis, bowling, and the Mentor dinner. Also the WHERE
paper on our mentors gave us a chance to get to know and
learn more about each
other."...................................................................--Christina
Mulvihill
"I'd have to say that what I most liked about the Puente
Program was meeting my friends. I also liked the mentoring.
I learned a lot about my mentor Alicia and I hope to learn
more."......................................................................................................................................--Maria
Duran
"I liked visiting UC Santa Cruz because it showed the
determination of Jacquie and Rachel and the other Puente
teachers and showed that they are interested in the
advancement of our
futures."..........................................................................................................................--Anthony
Perez
"Puente was a great opportunity for me. Being a first
semester college student, I really knew nothing about
college, especially in an area where I have no friends or
family. Puente helped me meet new people and start a new
family..........................................................--Angel
Gutierrez
"I enjoyed the Puente Student Motivational Conference at UC
Santa Cruz because I got to see a lot of other Puente
students from around the Bay
Area.".............................................................................................................................................................................................--Adrian
Ranola
"The whole Puente experience has been very fun and
educational for me. I enjoyed the mentoring because I got to
learn more about someone who has gone through things I have
yet to experience. I got good advice and made a strong
friendship with my
mentor.".......--Christina
Reyes
"I really enjoyed meeting with my mentor Anita. She is a
very interesting woman with an incredible life story. Even
though neither of us bowled that Saturday, I had a good time
talking with
her."......................................................................................................................--Julia
Gonzalez
"My Puente experience was a good experience because I met a
lot of new friends. Also working with a mentor gave me a
chance to see how hard it is in the work field. I also
learned about Latinos and how hard it has been to get where
we are at
today."..............--Christian
Altamirano
"All the Puente events were meaningful in my life because
they changed me in different ways. We experienced different
universities and this really helped me because it gave me an
idea of what it feels to be independent in the university
setting. The experiences I've had have been
unforgettable."..........................................................................................................................................................................--Veronica
Moreira
"The UC trips gave me an up-close view of a 4-year college
campus-something I'd never seen before. In my mind,
universities were something I thought I'd never see,
nonetheless would ever do. With the help of my teacher,
counselor, and mentor, I not only saw campuses but the
entire picture of what going to college can do to benefit me
and make my life a better
one."...........................................................--Sandra
Aragon
"One of the things I like the most about Puente is the
mentor experience. I think having a mentor in a career of
your interest is very
helpful."......................................................................................................................................................................................--Raquel
Guerrero
"My Puente experience has been beneficial because it has
helped me to see that education for Hispanics is very
important and that anyone who wants to accomplish their
goals can do
it."..............................................................................................................................--Vanessa
Moreira
