Welcome Puente Students, Mentors and Amigos de Puente to the Spring Semester of 2002!
The Puente English class is in full swing and the students have completed drafts of their first papers. The class is continuing reading articles from The Latino/a Condition. The first unit we're studying is called "Nativism, Racism, and Our Social Construction as a 'Problem' Group." The second unit is entitled "Rebellious Lawyering and Resistance Strategies: We Fight Back," and students will be interviewing their mentors to ask their opinions on the issues raised in this unit and integrating pieces of their mentor interview in their papers. The third unit and subject for the in-class midterm is called "Sex, Gender and Class." For the fourth unit, the students will be writing collaborative papers on the book Harvest of Empire: A History of Latinos in America by Juan Gonzalez. Then we will wrap up the semester with a compilation of short stories and memoirs titled Growing Up Chicana/o edited by Tiffany Ana Lopez. But it won't be all work and no play for the Puente students this semester; see below for all the fun activities coming up…

Recruiting Mentors for the Mentor Council:

The overall mission of the Mentor Council is to support the Puente Program in areas of advocacy, fundraising, and leadership. Mentors will help the program co-coordinators Jacquie and Rachel explore such questions as:

............* How do mentors enhance the transfer of students?
............* How to better foster the student-mentor relationship?
............* How to recruit new mentors to the Puente Program?
............* How to raise funds for mentor-related events?

An informational meeting for mentors interested in serving on the Mentor Council will be held at the Skyline College campus on Thursday, February 28th. Please contact Jacquie if you're interested in attending.
