The Puente
English class is in full swing and the students
have completed their first papers on Sandra
Cisneros' The House on Mango Street. Puente
English class will be beginning its next book, A
Place to Stand by Jimmy Santiago Baca, this month.
But it won't be all work and no play for the Puente
students this semester; see below for the fun
activities coming up

Upcoming
Puente Dinner:
Puente
students are going to be getting to know one
another better at the upcoming dinner at Chevy's
Mexican Restaurant, 141 Hickey Blvd in So. SF, on
Thurs, Feb 13th at 6pm. Puente mentors and Amigos
de Puente are welcome to attend as well! Please
RSVP to Imelda by Tues, Feb 11th. The dinner is
courtesy of Skyline's Associated Students. Puente
would like to thank ASSC for its incredible
generosity and long-standing support. Last
semester, ASSC funded a Puente movie night/dinner
as well as paid for lunch after Puente's
student/mentor mural tour in the Mission District
in SF. Thank you ASSC!!!
Skyline
College and the UC Santa Cruz Educational
Partnership Center are sending selected Skyline
students on a 3-day trip to UCLA, UCSD, and UCSB
over spring break, April 16th-18th. Students should
have a minimum GPA of 2.4, be currently enrolled in
ASTEP, CalWorks, EOPS, Honors Transfer, MESA,
Puente, STAARS, and/or the Transfer Opportunity
Center, and be currently enrolled with a minimum of
6 UC transferable units. The application deadline
is Feb 14th. Several of Skyline's programs will
sponsor the selected students, so there is no cost
to the student. For more information and for

Scholarship
News:
The
application for the 2003-2004 Community College
Transfer Scholarship Program is now available on
the Hispanic Scholarship Fund website at
www.hsf.net or call 1-877-HSF-INFO. The deadline
is Feb 15, 2003.
Eligibility requirements:
* Hispanic heritage (1 parent full or each parent
1/2 Hispanic)
* Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident
* Be a part-time or full-time community college
student
* Have a minimum GPA of 3.0
* Be transferring on a full-time basis to a 4-year
accredited
...college
or univ. in the U.S. in the 2003-2004 academic year
Award amounts range from $1,000-$2,500 and are
distributed in Fall 2003 and Winter/Spring 2004.
