Mentor Dinner at Chevy's:
On Friday, February 15th, students and mentors gathered at Chevy's Restaurant in South San Francisco for an evening of good conversation, laughter, and appetizers. Mentors were also introduced to the current unit Puente students are writing their papers on - "Rebellious Lawyering and Resistance Strategies: We Fight Back." As one of the "outside resources" on their second paper, students interviewed their mentors to get their opinion on issues addressed in the readings. Thank you all for making the event a success!!!!!

The Upcoming Mentor/Student Saturday Event:
Mentors and Puente students, start deciding now what you would like to do on April 13th! Last semester we went bowling, so what creative adventure do you have in store for us this semester?? It can be a fun experience, a learning experience, but please no physical challenges like climbing Everest or risking life and limb in any way! J Mentors, please give your mentee some suggestions on how you would like to spend your Saturday! A nice park BBQ, a visit to a local museum-the more creative and fun the better!

An Update on the Puente English class:
The next unit we are beginning is called "Sex, Gender, and Class: Sure I'm Latino, but I'm Still Different from You-How About it?" and students will be reading the following articles: "Mexican Gender Ideology," "Domestic Violence against Latinas by Latino Males," "Maternal Power and the Deconstruction of Male Supremacy," "Three Perspectives on Workplace Harassment of Women of Color," and "Culture and Economic Violence." Students will take an in-class essay midterm on these readings on Friday, March 22nd.

Upcoming UC Berkeley College Tour
On Friday, March 15th, Puente students will tour the University of California, Berkeley campus to explore transfer, major, and financial aid possibilities. Along with a presentation from UC Berkeley Outreach Representatives, and past Skyline College transfer students, students will also get a walking tour of the campus (one and a half hours long so bring comfortable shoes!!!). The Puente Program coordinates campus tours to provide students an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the UC campuses before they apply to the college. Along with having different major options, each UC campus has its own culture and personality. Some campuses are located in urban settings (like the UC Berkeley campus), while other campuses are located in rural locations (like UC Santa Cruz, whose campus is found in the Santa Cruz hills). Students are strongly encouraged to visit and learn about many campuses before applying. Creating a good fit between the "student" and the campus is important to the students' success at the college. If the student is happy with the environment in which they are studying, their chances of having a good university experience increases their opportunities for success. Mentors interested in joining the Puente students on this tour can contact Jacqueline for travel information.
