UC Southern California Universities Field Trip:
Congratulations to Aridiana Castellanos, Saskia Garay, and Erika Maida who were selected to attend the three-day trip to UCLA, UCSD, and UCSB over spring break, April 16th-18th!! Have a great trip!!

Upcoming UC Berkeley College Tour
On Friday, March 21st, Puente students will tour the University of California, Berkeley campus to explore transfer, major, and financial aid possibilities. The Puente Program coordinates campus tours to provide students an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the UC campuses before they apply to the college. Along with having different major options, each UC campus has its own culture and personality. Students are strongly encouraged to visit and learn about many campuses before applying. Creating a good fit between the "student" and the campus is important to the students' success at the college. If the student is happy with the environment in which they are studying, their chances of having a good university experience increases their opportunities for success!

WOW Conference:
The Women on Writing (WOW) Conference is coming to Skyline's campus on Saturday, March 8th. We're proud of our Puente mentors who are involved: Regina Stanback-Stroud, Rosemary Ibarra-Garcia, and Anita Martinez. If you would like to attend the conference, call 650-738-4324.

On Monday, March 17, the Associated Students of Skyline are providing FREE transportation to Sacramento. Buses leave Skyline at 8am and return at 4pm. For more information, call 650-738-4275 or stop by the Student Activities Office, room 2350b.

Puente English Class Update:
Puente students just completed their papers on Jimmy Santiago Baca's A Place to Stand and now have begun their third book in the semester, Hombres y Machos by Alfredo Mirandé. According to Mirandé, the reason he wrote this sociological text was "…because I was dissatisfied with the images of Latino men and masculinity that prevailed not only in the social science literature but also in the society at large. I felt that these images were used to perpetuate negative conceptions of Mexicans and to legitimate our economic and political subordination" (5). Puente students will be taking an in-class essay midterm on this text on March 19th.
