Puente Tours Los Angeles Colleges:

Several Puente students, along with Puente Counselor Jacquie, rented a van and drove to Los Angeles during Spring Break for a tour of the University of Southern California (USC) and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). USC, a prestigious private-university located in Los Angeles, boasts schools of Architecture, Dentistry, Engineering, Medicine, Pharmacy, and the famous School of Cinema-Theatre (with alumni including George Lucas and Steven Spielberg). UCLA, one of nine campuses in the University of California system, is known for its high caliber of faculty and future leaders it produces as well as its programs in Engineering and Theatre. During the college visit, students got the opportunity to tour these campuses as well as visit various offices of interest. But before visiting the colleges, students took some "fun time" to visit the Disneyland Theme Park in Anaheim, California. Although the park was crowded with Spring Break visitors from all over the country, students got the opportunity to ride the many attractions. Overall, the LA trip was a great success!

An Update on the Puente English class:

Students have begun a collaborative paper, two students working together to write one paper that incorporates research, on the book we are currently reading Harvest of Empire : A History of Latinos in America by Juan Gonzalez. The book covers 500 years-from the first New World colonies to the turn of the millennium-and examines how Latinos (Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, Cubans, Dominicans, Central Americans, Colombians, and Panamanians) have shaped and transformed our nation's cultural landscape.

Puente Program Tours UC Berkeley

On Friday, March 15th, Puente students attended UC Berkeley to tour its beautiful campus. As part of the agenda, Puente students met with UC Berkeley representatives who discussed admissions requirements, selective majors, and financial aid information. Afterwards, students were led on a tour of the scenic UC campus, learning interesting facts along the way. Did you know that 8 current UCB faculty members hold a Nobel Prize and there are 18 in total who have received one? And did you know that UCB has over 30 libraries with over nine million volumes? After lunching on pizza and coke on Shattuck Avenue which was bustling with UCB students, Puente students were treated to a motivating and information packed scholarship seminar conducted by Mariana Sierra, a current Puente mentor and an Industrial Engineering major at UC Berkeley. Mariana, and several of her fellow classmates from an education class at UCB, provided students with information on scholarships, internships, and housing. In addition, the UCB students touched upon their experiences of transferring from a community college to UCB, class demands, and the social life at UCB. Overall, we all had a really great day and a fun trip!!!
