Welcome to
Puente's monthly
newsletter!
If you haven't yet heard of Puente, the Puente
project is a national-award winning program that
has helped thousands of educationally under-served
students succeed in school and college through
teaching, counseling, and also mentoring. Puente
currently serves students in 38 community colleges
and 31 high schools throughout California.
The
Writing
Component:
The writing course is being taught by Rachel Bell,
who is new to Puente this year but has been a
writing instructor at Skyline College since 1996.
The students' first writing project is a WHERE
paper which asks them to examine where they have
been, where they are now, and where might they be
going personally, culturally and also academically.
The students will then be examining various
readings from the course text The Latino/a
Condition (eds. R. Delgado & J. Stefancic)
which presents articles on racial identity,
immigration, treatment of Latinos in the media,
bilingualism, as well as many other pertinent
issues connected with Latinos and people of color
living in the U.S.. Additionally, the students will
read the novel Macho! by Victor Villasenor, which
tells of a young Mexican man's journey to
California. For more information on this class,

The
Counseling
Component:
The counseling course is being taught by Jacqueline
Escobar who has just completed her fifth year as
the Puente counselor at Skyline. In Jacquie's
class, the students will be introduced to all the
support services at Skyline; they will be involved
with educational as well as career planning; and
they will be taught important study skills to
increase their success as students. The course text
is called Latino Success: Insights from 100 of
America's Most Powerful Latino Professionals
(by Augusto A. Failde).
The
Mentor Component:
All Puente students will be paired with a working
professional connected with the students' career
goals and interests. Mentors introduce students to
their workplaces; share their strategies for
success; and spend time with their mentee about 2-3
hours per month (for 1 school yr).
Puente
Student Club:
The Puente Club has given a voice, and a face, to
the Latino student on the Skyline College campus.
The goal of the Puente Club is to promote Latino
culture on campus, as well promote community
service and leadership. Contact info: Student
