Welcome to Puente's monthly newsletter!
As many of you know, the Puente project is a national-award winning program that has helped thousands of educationally under- served students succeed in school and college through teaching, counseling, and also mentoring. Puente currently serves students in 38 community colleges and 31 high schools throughout California.

The Writing Component:
The writing course is being taught by Rachel Bell, who begins her second year with Puente and has been a writing instructor at Skyline College since 1996. The students' first writing project is a WHERE paper which asks them to examine where they have been, where they are now, and where might they be going personally, culturally and also academically. Then we will read The Red Camp by Debra Diaz which examines the lives of migrant workers. Next we will read Hunger of Memory by Richard Rodriguez which is "a poignant journey of a 'minority student' who pays the cost of his social assimilation and academic success with a painful alienation-from his past, his parents, his culture-and so describes the high price of 'making it' in middle class America." Richard Rodriguez will be speaking at Skyline on Thursday, October 10th at 7:30pm in Gallery Theatre. Finally, we will read De Colores Means All of Us by Elizabeth Martínez. The Mentor Component:
All Puente students will be paired with a working professional connected with the students' career goals and interests. Mentors introduce students to their workplaces; share their strategies for success; and spend time with their mentee about 2-3 times per semester for 1 school year.

The Counseling Component:
Imelda Hermosillo, who begins her first year with Puente and has worked in Student Services at the 2-year and 4-year schools for 17 years, is teaching the Counseling course. In the Puente Counseling Seminar, we will focus on strengthening student academic success skills, guiding students in their research, selecting academic majors and career interests, and familiarizing students with higher educational opportunities. The text we will be using in called On Course-Strategies for Creating Success in College and in Life by Skip Downing.
