Belize – Dec 2002 to Jan 2003

......
We headed north from Honduras to the island of San Pedro, Belize--the
island Madonna sang about in her song "La Isla Bonita" (the
beautiful island).

In San Pedro, the streets are covered with sand and people mainly get
around on foot, on bicycle and some even rent golf carts.

During our week on San Pedro, we went snorkeling a few times and saw
beautiful and colorful fish and live corals reefs. We also got to swim
with, pet and feed manta rays that varied in size from a 1 to 5 feet from
wing tip to wing tip. There were also harmless nurse sharks as seen in this
picture.

The front street of San Pedro (the island is so small there are only 3
main streets and until recently they were simply called front, middle and
back street). Here you can see the kids, in the white and blue uniforms,
getting out of school.

In Belize, like Livingston, the main language is English (again,
spoken with a Jamaican sounding accent) and the community is mainly black.
Here the Punta Boyz are performing, a very
popular local band who played punta and reggae
music.

One day we went on an all-day boat tour where we looked for Manatees in
a nature preserve off the coast of Belize City, the country's capital; then
we swam with a school of manta rays, and snorkeled around and then had
lunch on this little island an hour from San Pedro.

The island of Caye Caulker.

As you can see, San Pedro was a hard place to leave, but we did after a
great week there.
