Malaysia – June 2000

The port town of
Malacca on the
southeastern coast of Malaysia.

The Muzium Samudera, a
maritime museum which
told of Malacca's history
of being colonized and
fought over by the Dutch
and Portuguese.

Malaysia's population is
about 30% Chinese and 60% Malay, many of
whom are Muslim as seen
by the A & W workers
wearing tudongs, the
traditional Muslim
head-covering.

An ornate Chinese
temple in Malacca.

Inside the oldest Chinese
temple in Malacca, there
were shrines containing pictures of the dead.

In the capital city, Kuala
Lumpur

They had a building which resembled
Seattle's Space Needle.

Kuala Lumpur is also
home to these impressive
twin towers which were
featured in the movie
Entrapment, and at one
time were the tallest
buildings in the world.

The Batu Caves, located
outside of Kuala Lumpur,
contain Hindu shrines at
the top of several hundred
stairs. Inside the caves, many Indians can be
found in prayer.

One of the friends I was
traveling with was born in
Malaysia but left when
she was 9 months old.
This was her first time
back, and here she is with
some of her family who
live in Malaysia.
