Baja California, Mexico: August 2017

I went for a week at the beginning of August 2017 to the southern tip of Baja California, Mexico, about 900 miles southeast of San Diego, with my husband Chuck, our friend and Chuck’s bandmate Mike, and my friend and fellow Skyline English teacher Rob Williams.

We stayed at the Royal Solaris all-inclusive resort in San Jose del Cabo, just north of Cabo San Lucas (English translation: Cape of Saint Luke).

We went horseback riding on the beach along the shoreline.

One night we went to a dance and singing performance.

We also visited downtown Cabo San Lucas and the marina located there.

A highlight of the trip was going out in a glass bottom boat and snorkeling in the Sea of Cortez in Cabo San Lucas.

We saw the famous El Arco (the Arch).  It marks the start of Land’s End where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez (the Gulf of California). The Arch has been carved over time as rough winds and waters of the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez erode the rocks away.

There were many dramatic rock formations along this coastline including one they say looks like a coyote howling.

We also got to see a seal sunning itself on one of the big ocean rocks.

There were tons of fish, some in big schools, in the area where we snorkeled and the ocean was very warm.

There was a replica of a pirate ship out on the water with us.  In the mid-1500s, Spanish merchant marines established a trade route from Luzon in the Philippines to Acapulco in the south of New Spain. They carried tons of oriental silks, spices, Mexican gold and silver which attracted English pirates.

It was both a fun and relaxing time with good friends.
