For Further thought......
The mammalian fetus has different needs from an adult mammal due to the source of oxygen for a fetus. These difference inlcude the presence of the Ductus arteriosus (shown in diagram below) and the foramen ovale, a connection between the atria (not shown).

Examine the diagram below, noting that the color blue represents deoxygenated blood and the color red represents oxygenated blood. Answer the following questions.

  1. What does purple represent?
  2. What is the source of oxygen for the mammalian fetus?
  3. Which 2 major blood vessels are connected by the ductus arteriosus?
  4. Why do these differences exist in the fetus?
