LSCI 106: ONLINE RESEARCH 1: INTRODUCTION TO ONLINE RESEARCH

Student Project: Mike McKellar

RESEARCH QUESTION:

How have Gibson guitars effected/influenced guitar players through the years?

The year 1894 marks a life changing event for musicians all over the world. This is the year that the musical passion that is Gibson Inc. was first introduced to a grateful array of instrumentalists. Gibson today is well known for its style, craftsmanship, and undeniably beautiful tone. Although researching Gibson guitars isn’t going to save any lives or end world hunger, there is something that the research will do- educate people of a truly amazing musical phenomena that has swept across the world for over 100 years. Some of the world’s greatest guitarists including Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and the majority of early blues musicians cranked their amps up to 10 to and demonstrated to the world the brilliantly rich and smooth sound of a Gibson guitar. Well, The world was listening and continues to do so. Personally I thought it would be very interesting to see just how much Gibson guitars, guitar players, and guitar trends have changed since Gibson’s start in 1894 all the way to the present, nearly 2004. They say “to predict the future, you have to understand the past”. Well, there’s only one way to find out! Gibson has played such an incredible role in the musical world in the past, and I have a feeling another 100 years can’t slow down its momentum.

Gibson Music Company. 2003. 30 Nov. 2003. <http://gibson.com>.

This website is pretty legitimate. It's official, after all- straight from the source. Just looking at the URL makes you feel comfortable, because you know that a website with the address: Gibson.com is likely to be hosted by ones related to the company. The content is current and true, although slightly biased. The people working for Gibson think their guitars are the greatest, hands down. Information tends to be in a brief overview format. The facts listed in the site are credible and probably don't really need too much documentation due to the fact that the information is coming directly from the company itself. In many ways this page is trying to sell something to the viewer. It's not directly saying "buy a Gibson guitar right now," but they make their guitars seem very tempting, so in this way, yes they appear to be trying to sell to you. Information doesn't have to be entered to proceed. There doesn't appear to be any creation a update time/date, but the links to Gibson related articles are all dated. The information is up to date. This website is obviously intended for guitar players, but it's friendly to the general public too. Purpose of information is to inform and market a product. I wouldn't say that this purpose was clearly stated, it's more something you have to read between the lines for.
