RESEARCH QUESTION:

What role – if any -- does the burning of fossil fuels play in global warming?

It is generally acknowledged in the scientific community that the world is getting warmer. However, the reason for this change is fiercely debated. Many believe that human activity is at the root of global warming, specifically the burning of fossil fuels which releases carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses into the air. Others believe that it is a natural fluctuation of the earth's climate. The goal of this research project is to examine the evidence that global warming is caused by the burning of fossil fuels.

According to the John Ray Initiative, which he chairs, Sir John Houghton " has held positions as chairman or co-chairman of Scientific Assessment for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), 1988-2002, Professor of Atmospheric Physics at the University of Oxford, 1976-1983, Director General and Chief Executive of the UK Meteorological Office, 1983-1991, Chairman of the UK Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution, 1992-1998, member of the UK Government Panel on Sustainable Development, 1994-2000." David Hinckley said in his review of the book that "Global warming is well written, with good illustrations, ample citations, and an adequate glossary. When you realize that the three official 1995 IPCC reports total 1931 large pages, Sir John has prepared a remarkably "complete briefing."
