After introducing examples of
a new section, I assign a range of problems from the current section for you
to select work from. You should try the odds in that range, check the answers
in back, go to tutoring, etc., and bring questions to class. BE SURE TO CLICK ON

We talked about the
place-value system in section 1.1. You should be able to do problems like p7
#23-30. We then briefly talked
about the addition problems in section 1.2. You should read thru the section
and see if you have any questions. Homework will be assigned next time. We ended with talking about
how multiplication is really repeated addition, and that for future work, you
must either memorize your times tables up to 12x12 or use the repeated
addition principal to find the answer. For example, if you wanted to find 4x6
and did not have the answer memorized, you could also say that if means add 6
to itself 4 times: 6+6+6+6=24, so 4x6=24 ! |
F 1/19 |

your test (see above). Come on Friday and pass it! |
F 2/23 |
I will have your tests
ready on Monday. No homework to turn in. We will move on with ch.2 next time. |
M 2/26 |
Show all prime factors for
each number, then use them to cancel. Try the 2 problems from the
book: 2.6 p.132 # 39, 42 and the following: If
you came to class on Weds. but did not turn in the assignment, here are a few
more problems to make up for it (since we went over them in class!): To those who did not pass
the Unit 1 test on Friday, I sent you an email if you had one on file, but I
am putting a copy of the message here in case you did not: As
per the syllabus at http://www.smccd.net/accounts/callahanp “For
each scheduled unit test, if you 1. do not qualify to take it, 2. fail to show up to take it as scheduled, or 3. fail to pass it, you
may earn a maximum of two more chances to take it. You must spend at least 4
new hours (sometime after the test) in the tutoring lab to qualify for each
new attempt. If you do not pass it before the next scheduled unit test, you
will be dropped from the course. You must show evidence of making progress
with the material to continue in the class. If you are dropped, you will
receive “No Credit” for the class and may not continue coming to class. You
should continue study the material in the book (with the help of the tutoring
lab) and attempt the placement test again at the testing center to try to
qualify for Algebra.” To
make sure that you are spending the required tutoring time in 16-166,
you must log in to the computer and log out at the end of
your session AND you must have the following filled out: MATH 811 Tutoring Slip Student name: ____________________________ The student above is required to show proof of 4 hours work in
the tutoring lab 16-166 and must receive a sign-off from a tutor on duty that
at least one question was asked of the tutor for every half hour spent in the
lab. This includes asking the tutor to look at a problem completed in the
lab, or asking how to do a problem.

copy in class on Wednesday if you need it, or you may print it out from your
email or this page. This obligation is not negotiable. If you did not take
and/or pass the test, you did not meet your obligation and must make
arrangements to make it up. It is in the class schedule that when you sign up
for this course you are available to spend the “hour by arrangement” time
outside of class. Check with the tutoring lab in bldg. 16 room 166 and see
that they have a lot of hours of tutoring available. |
W 2/28 |
We worked on the use of
primes to cancel factors in a multiplication problem and then talked about
how division is a form of multiplication. So in 2.7, if you flip over the fraction
after the division sign, it turns into multiplication and then you can do the
same thing you did in section 2.6! If
you came to class on Weds. but did not turn in the assignment, here are a few
more problems to make up for it (since we went over them in class!) or just
use them for practice!: Homework
due on Friday: 2.7
p141 # 10, 14, 18, 26, 30 |
F 3/2 |
After class, I checked with
the tutoring lab, room 16-166 and they said none of my students had checked
in for help! If you go, go to the computer and log in/log out with your
student ID so that we can keep track of who is receiving help. The funding
for this free tutoring depends on it! And if you did not pass the first Unit
Test, it is mandatory that you go…do not put it off! From 9 to 1 there are 2
tutors on duty and all other times at least 1 tutor. There are also tutors
for higher math in 16-168 and if they are not busy, they might be able to
help you too! Homework: 3.1 read the
section and do p156 #4, 6, 10, 14, 20. |

8, 16, 20 The answer to the quiz was:
51/10 divided by 43/10 = 51/10 multiplied by 10/43. The 10 in the top and
bottom cancel to leave 51/43 which as a mixed number is 1 and 8/43. Note that your
Unit 2 test will occur on Weds. of next week. It will be made of one question
from each of the following sections: 1. section 2.6 multiply fractions 2. section 2.7 divide fractions 3. section 3.1 Find the LCM 4. section 3.2 Add and simplify
fractions 5. section 3.3 Subtract and simplify

to take the Unit 2 test and who have tutoring hours will take it on Friday.
Others who wish to receive instruction will come and we will talk about 10.4. The first
attempt at the Unit 3 test will be a week from Friday, and in order for you
to start preparing, it will have the following format (in the case of those
that have two choices, I have not decided yet, so some problems may have a
different order, such as possibly switching #5 and #6 once I make a
decision): UNIT 3 TEST FORMAT: 1. Multiply decimals in 4.3 #1-48 2. Divide
decimals in 4.4 #1-36 3. Solve for x using decimals in 4.2

Friday is for
testing. Those who need to retake a test have talked to me and will be
prepared to come on Friday to complete it. |
F 5/18 |
The last chance
to pass a missing unit test is Weds. 5/23 in the regular room but from 8am to
9am only (this is during our regular finals time, so you are expected to be
free at this time). I am expecting several students. Those who have
disappeared MUST CONTACT ME before then to let me know their plans. I will
not offer any tests to “surprise” students. |
