Acentos en español: una explicación espontanea.
I. Regla General.
1. Most words in Spanish do not need an accent. when a Spanish word is pronounced, the stress in pronunciation should fall in the syllable second to last.

2. Words in which the stress falls in a syllable different than the second to last one,when pronounced, need a graphic accent.

EXCEPTIONS TO THE RULE (Rules that contradict #1 and #2)
Words ending in l,r,z,d and n contradict the general rule. Sometimes even when stress falls in the second to last (penultimate) syllable the word, if ending in the aforementioned letters still has a graphic accent. Moreover, other times if the stress in pronunciation falls in a syllable different than the second to last the word does not have an accent.

5. When a given word has the stress in pronunciation in a syllable formed by an "increasing diphtong", i.e. when the first vowel is a weak one such as "I" or "U" followed by another strong vowel such as "a", "e" or "o", THERE IS NO ACCENT NEEDED.

5.1. When words present their stress in pronunciation a weak vowel and the diphtong is pronounced separately, the weak vowel takes the graphic accent.

6. Some words have an accent to be differentiated from others with identical spelling but different meaning.

7. ALL INTERROGATIVE WORDS IN AN INTERROGATIVE SENTENCE OR QUESTION HAVE ACCENTS.
