ACENTOS

Prof. Luciana Castro

Acentos en español: una explicación espontanea.

I. Regla General.

1. Most words in Spanish do not need an accent. when a Spanish word is pronounced, the stress in pronunciation should fall in the syllable second to last.

Ejemplos:

  • mesa, silla, arquitectura, continente, violeta, recepcionista, etc...

2. Words in which the stress falls in a syllable different than the second to last one, when pronounced, need a graphic accent.

Ejemplos:

  • Lámpara, mero, tefono, Cana, xico, Pana, ma, papá, bebé.

EXCEPTIONS TO THE RULE (Rules that contradict #1 and #2)

Words ending in l,r,z,d and n contradict the general rule. Sometimes even when stress falls in the second to last (penultimate) syllable the word, if ending in the aforementioned letters still has a graphic accent. Moreover, other times if the stress in pronunciation falls in a syllable different than the second to last the word does not have an accent.

Ejemplos:

  • papel, capital, hospital, igual, cartel
  • televisor, preliminar, vapor, mentor, director, profesor
  • piz, rez, Rodríguez, Sánchez, maiz
  • Usted, sinceridad, ciudad, merced

4. SIEMPRE SON ACENTUADAS: the following words always have an accent.

When they end in ción or n

Ejemplos:

  • corazón, razón,concentración, tradición, melocotón, educación

5. When a given word has the stress in pronunciation in a syllable formed by an "increasing diphtong", i.e. when the first vowel is a weak one such as "I" or "U" followed by another strong vowel such as "a", "e" or "o", THERE IS NO ACCENT NEEDED.

Ejemplos:

  • pie, Mario, diario, ejercicio...

5.1. When words present their stress in pronunciation a weak vowel and the diphtong is pronounced separately, the weak vowel takes the graphic accent.

Ejemplos:

  • María, río, tío, tía,...

6. Some words have an accent to be differentiated from others with identical spelling but different meaning.

Ejemplos:

  • = you; tu= your; mi= my; = me; se=pronoun; = I know; él= he; el= the (masculine)

7. ALL INTERROGATIVE WORDS IN AN INTERROGATIVE SENTENCE OR QUESTION HAVE ACCENTS.

Ejemplos:

  • ¿Cómo estás?
  • ¿De dónde es usted?
  • ¿Dónde está Ud.?
  • ¿Cuál es la fecha de hoy?
  • ¿Qué hay?

OTHER CASES WILL BE POINTED OUT TO BE MEMORIZED AS THE COURSES PROGRESSES
