Text:               Elementary and Intermediate Algebra, 3rd Edition, by Hubbard and Robinson. We will cover chapter 1 though chapter 3 section 3. A TI-83 graphing calculator is required for the course.

Office:            My office is in building two in room 2307. I plan to hold office hours 9:10-10:00 MWF and 10:10-11 TTh. If you need to see me at some other time, please feel free to drop in or make an appointment.

Attendance:   Attendance on time is expected and required.  If you know you will be absent, tell        me before hand and get the assignment or call one of your classmates.  Falling behind in a       math class just doesn’t work. Irregular attendance is grounds for being dropped.

Homework:    The only way to learn math is to practice.  I encourage you to work together and expect you to get help when you need it. I will assign homework at most class meetings to be collected during the next. For most people, the homework will take a LOT of time, so plan ahead! I will check that you have completed the assignment, but will not check for correctness. Check the study guide or with a tutor if you want to know if you are correct. The homework and quizzes together will count for 15% of your grade.

Quizzes:         We will have a quiz on recent and new material as often as I can fit it in. Some quizzes will be “group” quizzes and will count as much as 3 or 4 homework assignments. There will be no make-up quizzes. The homework and quizzes together will count for 15% of your grade.

Exams:           There will be approximately 5 exams, two each in chapters one and two, and one in chapter three. There will be no makeup exams, but your lowest score will be worth half of the other exams.  Exams will count for 65% of your grade.

Final:             The final exam will be given on Monday, December 15 from 11:10 to 1:40. The final is cumulative and will count for 20% of your grade.

Grading:        To get a C in this class, you MUST have a C average on the exams and the final. The homework and quiz grade will not enable a student to pass who has not passed the exams. All letter grades will be determined by the following standard grading curve:

                                    ≥ 90%  -------------------> A

                                    ≥ 80% but < 90%  ------> B

                                    ≥ 70% but < 80%  ------> C

                                    ≥ 60% but < 70%  ------> D

                                    < 60%  -------------------> F
