Overview
This is an online class and to be successful in this class you
must be self disciplined. Even though there are not specific hours when
the class meets, you should schedule regular times to work on the material.
It has been my experience that when a student falls behind in an online
class they rarely catch up.
Math 120 covers 3.4 - 3.7, chapters 8 - 12 plus 4.4 and 4.5, Math 122
covers 3.4 - 3.7 and chapters 8 - 10, Math 123 covers chapters 11, 12,
and sections 4.4 and 4.5.
Types of Assignments
Homework: (10% of your grade)
You should try as many of the odd problems as you can in each
section that we cover. The answers to the odd problems are in the back
of the book, and solutions to the odds can be found in the student solution
manual (an optional book that can be purchased in the bookstore)
There is a homework assignment for each section that we will cover.
You are to complete the homework as you go through the book. It will
be turned in each time you take a test in the learning center. Homework
set 1 will be turned in at Test 1, homework set 2 will be turned in
at Test 2, homework set 3 will be turned in at Test 3, and homework
set 4 will be turned in at Test 4. Each time you turn in HW it will
be worth 25 points. To get full credit for the homework, you must turn
in the work (not just the answers).
Quizzes: (15% of your grade)
There are 6 quizzes which are taken online. When you
take a quiz and click on the submit button your quiz score will be sent
to me electronically. You may only submit each quiz once.
Participation (5% of your grade)
You earn participation points by meeting the following requirements
- Attending the mandatory meeting on January 24th, 4 - 6pm in building 22 room 116 (5 points)
- Sending an email to me from the email address that you wish to use
for the course by January 31st (5 points).
- During the semester I will send out email questions that you must
answer by email. The email questions are sent in my weekly newsletter.
The first newsletter will be sent out on February 2nd. You have one
week to answer each email question. (1 point each)
- You will asked to complete a progress report every three weeks. (3 points each)
Tests (70% of your grade)
There are 4 tests to take for Math 120 (2 for Math 122 and 2
for Math 123). The tests are taken in the learning center (building
5 room 105). Tests 1 and 3 are worth 100 points and tests 2 and 4
are worth 200 points. You will be asked to show your ID when taking a
test in the learning center. Tests must be taken in one sitting (you
may not start a test, turn it in, and then come back to finish it).
The Learning center is open M - Th 8 am - 8 pm and F 8 am - 3 pm . Be sure to allow enough time for the test you are taking.
Test 2 is the Final exam for Math 122, and test 4 is the final exam
for Math 120 and 123.
There is no deadline for taking the tests, except that all tests must
be taken by May 18th.

Making Progress: You may be dropped from
the class for any of the following reasons:
- Not sending me your email address
- Not attending the Mandatory Meeting
- Falling more than 2 weeks behind (based on the schedule published
on this site)
Getting Help: It is very imortant that
you do not fall too far behind. If you are having trouble staying on schedule
the following may help.
- Send me an email and I can try to answer your questions through
email. With all of the symbols, it is not always easy to write out
algebra in emails.
- Come to my office hours (see my main homepage for a schedule)
- Visit the learning center (Hours are M - Th 8am to 8pm, F 8am -
3pm; Math lab M, Th 9am - 6:30pm, T 9am - 3:30pm, W 9am - 12:30 pm,
F 9am - 3pm)
- Look on the web. I have provided some links (click on Help Links
above). Let me know if you find some pages or if some of the links
are inactive.
- Arrange to get a tutor. Free tutoring is available through the learning
center.
