Biography

Screenshot 2024-10-28 at 1.24.56 PM.pngBryce Martens has more than 25 years of experience working in the computer industry. He has worked as a programmer, software development manager, and director of training, technical documentation, and corporate communications. He also worked as the marketing director for a software company in FosterCity. He attended San Francisco State University, where he started as a music major (that’s why he’s holding a trumpet).

He earned a Bachelor of Science, magna cum laude, in Statistics, and an MBA with an emphasis in management science and quantitative methods. Some of his early computer programming jobs included writing a forecasting system for a small investment company that was trying to predict the price of silver on the commodities market, writing numerous statistical analysis applications, and writing some business simulation software.

Later, he worked in business applications software development, where he managed several teams of programmers that created software products for retail stores, wholesale distributors, hotels, and paper distributors. His interests guided him towards system software (operating systems, compilers, drivers, etc.), and he joined a small company that created programming tools that were used by software developers. While he was in graduate school, Bryce started teaching college classes. At first, he taught computer programming and business math, then he moved into information systems and computer science. All the time he worked in the computer industry, he continued to teach night and online classes, first at San Francisco State University, and then at Skyline College. He joined the faculty at College of San Mateo in 1993 as an adjunct computer and information science instructor.

At CSM, he has taught day classes, night classes, Saturday classes, and he developed the first online CIS class (those being the days before course management systems like Canvas existed, so Bryce wrote his own code to do the job). Even though he continued to enjoy his “day job” in the computer industry, Bryce has always enjoyed working with the students at College of San Mateo. In addition to teaching, Bryce works on projects for CSM’s Workforce Development department. Bryce is the co-author of a college textbook entitled "Basic Programming with Applications in Business" (Kendall-Hunt, publisher), and the author of many technical manuals and technical training courses. He also served as Managing Editor of "Up and Running" magazine for 6 years.

It’s not all about computers, though. Bryce is still an active musician, music arranger, and conductor. Recently, he produced and played trumpet on a commercial recording of the Royal Court Brass, a group he has managed for more than 30 years. He also completed a concert tour of Germany and Austria, and regularly performs with professional and community music groups around the Bay Area.
