MUS 115 Art, Music & Ideas

Test 2 Recovery

The purpose of this assignment is to give you a second chance to demonstrate your understanding of the materials in Chapter 6, 7, 8 and 9, which cover the Medieval and Renaissance periods.  All examples should be drawn from the textbook, lecture, handouts or the class website.  Points earned will be added to your existing test score, raising it to a maximum of 95 points.  Answers should be about a page, double spaced.  Each answer can be worth up to 10 points.

R1. Compare a work of Renaissance music to one from the Medieval period.  What is the same and what is different?  Describe details of the music and your reaction to it.

R2.  Compare an example of Medieval architecture (Gothic or Romanesque) to a work of Renaissance architecture such as the Pazzi Chapel.  How do your chosen examples relate to the spirit of the style or period?  Describe details and explain why you choose each example.

R3.  Compare an example of Medieval art to Botticelli's La Primavera (The Birth of Spring) or Raphael's School of Athens.  What are the most important differences and how do they reflect the ideas associated with the era of each work?

R4.  Describe the technical innovation that makes the music of the Ars Nova possible and, often, audible.  Compare Perotin’s Viderunt Omnes with a work from the Ars Nova (choices on the CD on reserve include works by Machaut and the Ars Nova motet).

R5.  Make a timeline of at least five key developments or works in music and art of these two periods.  (Five points)
