Question Set – INDIA (and Tibet)
- Briefly
explain the melodic dimension (the system of pitch – scales, melody,
etc.) of Indian music – Raga.

You may use Khamaj, Desh,
Maru-Bihag and Bhimpalasi
as examples. Do they convey different moods to you?

- How much

listening? (subjective responses) What guides your ear as you
listen?
- How is
Indian music complex? How is it simple?
- Describe
specific examples of religious influences on Indian music culture and
religious uses of music. (These are scattered through the chapter on
India
in the textbook.)
- Choose
the Raga Khamaj performance (tracks 10 & 11)
or Ninnada nela (track
14) and give your subjective response to listening to this music,
incorporating objective detail to help clarify your point. Why did you choose one example
instead of the other? Use the
textbook listening guide (chart) as an aid in sharpening your perceptions.
- Listen
to the Tibetan example (Invocation from Mahakala
Puja, track 9) and give your subjective response
to listening to this music.
