TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2006 AT 7:00PM – SAN FRANCISCO

Kazue Sawai, koto

Fantasia by Tadao Sawai; Zangetsu by Minezaki Koto; Homura by Tadao Sawai

Kazue Sawai is recognized as Japan's most outstanding, innovative and versatile master of the koto, a stringed zitherlike instrument that is lionized by the Japanese as their country's "national instrument." Sawai, traditionally trained but committed to expanding her instrument's audience, shifts flawlessly from conventional koto classics to unorthodox, avant garde improvisations, and has redefined on an international scale the image of an instrument that is alternately bowed, strummed, plucked, rubbed, slapped and drummed. This singular musician's Old First Concerts debut program features compositions spanning two centuries.  MORE INFO AT OLD FIRST CONCERTS
