The First Session - Mutual Expectations
Expectations of Tutors and
Tutees
Both Tutors and Tutees are expected to...
Respect Personal Differences
Recognize and respect differences in culture, race, and gender found among the large variety of
people on a college campus. The Tutor and the Student may be different in a variety of ways, but
each must acknowledge that these differences can enhance tutoring sessions.

Come prepared to each tutoring session.
- For the Tutor this means that you have attended the required training sessions and
that you attend any ongoing training that your center deems necessary. It also means that any
problems that arose at a previous tutoring session with a Student have been resolved.
- For the Student this means attempting to work through homework and having
specific problems that need to be dealt with in tutoring. The Student must be aware that she or he
is the one taking the class and is the one who will be taking the tests. It is not the Tutor's job to
do the work, only to help.

Stick to Business
Focus entirely on the subject matter during tutoring sessions. Tutoring relationships can quickly
develop into social relationships.
When you are in a tutoring session, you must remember the purpose that has been established.
Save discussions of non-tutoring matters for other times. The college is paying the Tutor to
tutor, not to socialize.
- For the Tutor this includes the ability to manage the tasks of the tutoring session so
as to assure the success of the Student.
- For the Student this means coming to session without extraneous expectations
from the tutor and being ready with questions about the subject matter.

Be Polite
Keep noises, spatial arrangements, and lighting to an appropriate level for the learning
environment.
During an individual or group tutoring session, excitement, frustration, discouragement, and anger
can arise. Those surrounding your work area have their own discussions to carry out and should
not be distracted by your activities.
The Tutor must be aware of and minimize distractions, and the Student should identify
distractions so the Tutor can eliminate them.

Be Responsible
Know, understand, and act upon rules and regulations regarding scheduling and cancellations of
sessions set forth by your Tutoring Center. At all tutoring centers many students are waiting to
be served. Communication with and between tutors and students can sometimes be
difficult.
Your tutoring center has established efficient ways of running the center and will need your full
cooperation to serve you in the most effective way possible. Remember the reason for all the
rules as you observe them.

Be Sober
Come to tutoring sessions alcohol and drug free. Leaning cannot take place if alcohol and drugs
have been consumed.

Be Groomed
Attend sessions with appropriate dress, behavior, grooming, and cleanliness, so you will be
pleasant to be around.

Chill
Treat with respect those with whom you come in contact. A respectful attitude toward others
will encourage others to respect you.
The Tutor must realize that a Student with academic problems may become emotional in the
learning environment. It may be necessary for a Tutor to remind a Student to be stable, calm, and
polite.
If a problem arises that a Tutor or Student is unable to manage, a supervisor should be notified
right away.

Forms
Fill out the necessary forms required by your Tutoring Center.
The Tutor and the Student must be conscientious regarding the correct paper work, as all tutoring
centers must maintain accurate files.
