Lesson Six Exercise

X. KEY POINTS TO REMEMBER

  • A periodical is a publication – such as a magazine, journal, or newspaper – that’s published at periodic intervals, i.e. daily, monthly, etc. They’re very important sources of information for a variety of reasons and almost any research project should include them.

  • There are 5 types of periodicals:
    1) scholarly and research journals
    2) professional magazines and journals
    3) magazines and journals of commentary and opinion
    4) popular magazines and news magazines
    5) newspapers

  • Most periodicals are published in print format. However, in recent years, more and more electronic journals are being published on the Internet.

  • The most common types of periodical articles are:
    1) news articles
    2) analysis
    3) editorials
    4) investigative reports
    5) research articles
    6) literature review articles
    7) book reviews

  • To find periodical articles you must use a periodical index. A periodical index gives you citations to articles that have been published in a specific set of periodicals that cover certain subject area(s). Indexes cover a certain time period only. All of these factors are what’s known as the scope of an index.

  • There are 2 types of periodical indexes: general periodical indexes and subject periodical indexes.

  • Periodical indexes are available in print and computerized format. In general, no computerized periodical index includes articles published before 1980.

  • Most computerized indexes offer some or all of their articles in full-text, or at least with an abstract.

  • Hundreds of periodical indexes exist and it’s important to choose an index appropriate for your research question.
