|Personal & Professional Background|
A native of the Bay Area, I was lured to UC Santa Cruz as an undergraduate once I heard that the trees were populated by poets. I thrived on studying literature as a reflection of certain historical periods, peppering my analysis of these literary works with the knowledge I acquired from my other coursework in the humanities and social sciences. Wanting to get involved with my college community, I participated in efforts to defend educational rights. I still believe that education is a right for all, not a privilege for the few. My efforts in this area resulted in being one of four recipients of the statewide Academic Senate's Regina Stanback-Stroud Award in Diversity in 2002. (That's right-- the award is named after Skyline College's President!)
At UCSC, tutoring individual students and facilitating writing workshops awoke the latent teacher in me. I entered the graduate program in English Composition at San Francisco State University, and for three years taught writing, reading, and study skills to undergraduates.
Fortunately I was hired full time at Skyline. Today my goals as a teacher remain much the same as they did when I was a graduate student. I am not interested so much in teaching you what to believe as to how to engage in your own process of inquiry, and of course, to write well. I believe that you can best learn by getting plenty of hands-on experience teaching and learning from others. As such, you're expected to take an active role in my classroom, collaborating with classmates, practicing critical thinking strategies, giving presentations, and/or engaging in stimulating discussions both in the class and through the computer.
When not teaching, you can find me completely absorbed with a book, soaking in the outdoors with my husband and son, baking all things chocolate, and traveling.
