Friday, April 12
OUTCOMES: Apply Roots I; give and receive constructive feedback.

  • Work on your essay, due next Friday.
  • Preview A Place to Stand, and then read and annotate the Preface.

(13) Monday, April 15
OUTCOMES: Code the prologue; analyze quotes; revise your third essay.

  • Work on your essay, due on Friday.
  • By Wednesday, read and annotate the Prologue to 19 (Chapter 1) in A Place to Stand (APtS), and complete a dialectical journal and vocabulary chart with three unfamiliar words (Reader 68).
  • Optional: Revision of essay #2 due by Friday, April 26: You must meet with me in order to revise! Highlight the major changes on your revision, and submit it with the original essay with the gradesheet.
  • Meet in the computer lab, 2117B, on Wednesday.

Wednesday, April 17-- meet in 2117B
OUTCOMES: Review the Roots I quiz; code the first chapter and analyze the issues in the book.

  • Staple essay #3 to the essay cover letter (Reader 50) and the two blue peer response sheets. Underline your three sentences with coordinators and/or subordinators.
  • By Monday, read and annotate 20- 70 (Chapters 2- 3) in APtS, and complete a dialectical journal and vocabulary chart with three unfamiliar words (Reader 68).


Friday, April 19
OUTCOMES: Create a family tree; combine sentences with subordinators; apply roots to make an educated guess about the meaning of a word.

  • See Wednesday’s APtS homework (4/17).
  • Create and review your Roots II index cards (Reader 65).
  • Optional: Revision of essay #2 due by Friday, April 26: You must meet with me in order to revise! Highlight the major changes on your revision, and submit it with the original essay with the gradesheet.

OUTCOMES: Combine sentences with subordinators; code chapters 2-3 and analyze the issues raised in the book.

OUTCOMES: Analyze the issues raised in the book; generate words that relate to Roots II.

Wednesday, May 1
OUTCOMES: Code chapters 7- 9, and analyze the issues raised in chapters 6-8.

  • By Monday, finish the memoir, APtS. Quiz.


Friday, May 3
OUTCOMES: Generate ideas related to themes in the autobiography; code chapters 9-11.

  • See the past Wednesday’s APtS homework (5/1).
  • newUse a brainstorming strategy (e.g., cluster, freewrite, t-chart, list) to generate ideas for your essay topic. Note page numbers when you can. Turn in a copy for credit.


(16) Monday, May 6
OUTCOMES: Ace the quiz; create thesis statements and rough outlines for the various themes.

  • Create an outline for your essay with your thesis at the top and what will go into the P.I.E. body paragraphs (Reader 44). Turn in a copy.
  • Write your draft thesis on a blank page with your name for Wednesday’s thesis workshop.
  • Start working on your draft, which is due on Friday. See me if you need help!
  • newAfter you review the feedback on your essay on TOWM, answer the questions listed under "Acting on Instructor Comments" (Reader 53).
  • newOptional: If you revise your essay on TOWM, schedule an appointment with me. Revisions are due by Monday, May 20, 2 pm, in my office. Highlight any major additions on your revision, and submit it with the original essay and gradesheet.


Wednesday, May 8
OUTCOMES: Code chapters 9- 13, epilogue; refine thesis statements.  
To receive full credit, come on time with three copies total of your 2.5 page draft.


Friday, May 10
OUTCOMES: Give and receive constructive feedback.

  • Work on your essay. Get feedback from me and/or a tutor if you need help!


(17) Monday, May 13
OUTCOMES: Forge a plan to prepare for the final exam; combine sentences with transitions.

  • Work on your last essay. On Friday, submit it with your essay cover letter (Reader 50) and the two blue peer response sheets.
  • Prepare for your final exam.
  • newOptional: If you revise your essay on TOWM, schedule an appointment with me. Revisions are due by Monday, May 20, 2 pm, in my office. Highlight any major additions on your revision, and submit it with the original essay and gradesheet.


Friday, May 17
OUTCOMES: Combine sentences with coordinators, subordinators, and transitions; wrap up the semester.

  • The final exam is in Room 2117B on Wednesday, May 22, from 8:10- 10:40. You are strongly advised to bring your one-page “cheat sheet,” A Place to Stand, and- a flash- drive on which to periodically your final exam.
