Tests/Quizzes: Four tests of equal value will be given. The format for each test will be a mixture of multiple choice, short answer, matching and fill-in-the-blank. Makeups will not be given. Tests will be announced at least one week ahead of time. (I will try to give you more notice) An occasional unannounced quiz may be given; it is important for you to keep up with reading assignments and studying.

Attendance: Attendance will be taken at every meeting. You may be dropped from the course if you exceed 6 absences. If you must miss class because of illness or emergency, you should contact me in advance. Class will always begin on time. You are expected to be on time to class. If you are late, you will miss important announcements and instructions. It is your responsibility to make up any work you miss due to absence or tardiness.

Grading: Tests, quizzes and homework assignments will be worth approximately 70% of your grade; laboratory reports will be worth approximately 30% of your grade.

Letter grades will be assigned approximately as follows:

90% or better overall A

80% " " B

70% " " C

60% " " D

Below 60% F

Withdrawal: You are responsible for dropping the course if necessary. Do not expect to be automatically dropped if you do not show up for class. If you exceed 6 absences and do not drop the course before April 24, you will receive a final grade of F.

Laboratory and Field: The laboratory and field exercises are found in "Natural History of California, a laboratory and field manual. The laboratory and field reports are found at the end of each exercise. About half of the exercises will be field trips. Field trips are an important part of this course. Please notify the instructor immediately if you can not participate in field trips. Each laboratory or field report will be due the week after completion of the exercise. A tentative laboratory schedule is attached. Please note that a few trips require longer travel times or more time in the field. On those days we will be missing lecture and leaving early for the field trip. This schedule may be changed on any given Thursday due to a variety of factors such as unusual sun, rain, blooming flowers or stranded whales. Come prepared for a field trip every Thursday. A walk outside may be incorporated into indoor laboratories. If you must miss laboratory, you may write up a lab report and earn 1/2 the points. You must indicate the page numbers where the information was found. Clean-up is important in lab courses, so clean-up duties will be assigned. Points may be lost if your work area is not kept clean.
