Muir Woods is classifies as an Old Growth Forst. Old growth is defines as having 1)large live trees, 2) multilayered structured, 3) dead trees and 4) interdependent communities. A forest becomes old growth through time. It must be able to withstand natural disturbances and adapt to changing surroundings.
Muir Woods is the only Old Growth forest in the San Francisco Bay Area and one of the last on the planet.
