After a fire, trees will rejuvenate with new growth from burls, shown here at the base of the trunk. It is common for the bud tissue of burl sprouts to appear near the base of the tree or along the trunk. When a tree is sick, stressed or weakened (such as the result of a fire shown here), the burl will sprout. Trees that are fused together at the base probable started as burl sprouts.
