The protozoa in a termite's gut do not have the ability to digest cellulose. They are dependent on several species of bacteria inside and on the protozoa to digest cellulose. The structures that look like cilia on the protozoa are actually flagella from bacteria on the protozoa. The protozoan cell needs the bacteria to use their flagella, like oarsmen in a boat, to push the protozoan. Who do you think decides when and where to move, the protozoan or the bacteria?
