The mantle of the giant clam, Tridacna, is loaded with algal cells called dinoflagellates. The clam need only exposed its mantle to sunlight in order to obtain sugar and oxygen from the algae. The algae in return receive a suitable place to live and use the waste CO2 and NH3 from the animal's cells.
