Mouse over the cow to see the bacterial digestion.

Home

Grass enters the rumen where bacteria degrade the cellulose. The animal regurgitates the "cud" from the rumen and chews it to break the large cellulose fibers. The animal swallows which returns the "cud" to the rumen. The rumen bacteria will digest this macerated cellulose faster than the large pieces. This repeated regurgitating and chewing is called ruminating.
