This page is designed to help you locate the actin and myosin filaments for your experiment.

Alternating light (I) and dark (A) bands give the muscle fiber its striped appearance. The light I band consists of actin and the dark A band is where actin and myosin overlap. The actual contractile unit or sarcomere extends from the middle of one I band to the middle of the next I band along the myofibril.

Stained striated muscle. Labeled photo.
