Learning Objectives

  1. To understand the 3 organization systems used by libraries: subject headings, classification systems, and call numbers.

  2. To understand the basic structure and purpose of subject headings.

  3. To understand the basic structure and purpose of the Dewey Decimal and Library of Congress classification systems.

  4. To understand the parts of an LC call number and how books with LC call numbers are arranged on library shelves.

  5. To understand the purpose and structure of online catalogs.

  6. To be able to conduct basic searches of the Peninsula Library System online catalog, including author, title, subject, and keyword searches.

  7. To be able to search the online catalog by keyword, find a relevant record, and find related books by using that record’s subject headings.
