Fire clears the forest floor of leaf litter and debris. This allows seeds to fall onto a clearing that is rich in recycled nutrients. This clearing is imperative to the seed’s germination and the forest’s long term well being. Since leaf litter is widely dispersed all over the forest floor, only about 15-20% of seeds germinate into seedlings.
