Reflection Paper (Part I)

Go to the website for “Without Sanctuary” and view the narrated slide show (short). Proceed to view the gallery of photos collected by Allen. Understand that many of these photos will be difficult for you to view. Take time to view the information offered for each selection.
Write a 1.5 to 2 page typed (12 pt font) paper reflecting on your experience of these photos. What thoughts went through your mind? How did you feel? How do you explain the psychology of the participants in these gruesome acts?

Reflection Paper (Part II)

Consider the previous writing assignment on the photo exhibition “Without Sanctuary” .
Write a 1.5 to 2 page typed (12 pt font) paper reflecting your opinions on the following:

1. What attitudes, beliefs and practices do you think the participants may have passed down to their children?

2. Do you believe what was being taught in the ivory halls of education supported such behavior?

3. Does European historiography support such behavior? If so, how?

4. How does such behavior portray attitudes and beliefs that fit the model of racism as a mental disorder?

5. What attitudes, beliefs and practices do you think the victims may have passed down to their children?

6. What reactionary behaviors (pathological normalcy) might members of the African-descended community adopt (ie scratching where one does not itch) in order to survive such a hostile environment.

Exercise #3
Criminality

Psy 268 Black PsychologyIdentify a newspaper or magazine article, TV news clip or video segment from a film that illustrates some aspect of criminality.
Prepare at least one page of notes you will use to discuss how you define criminality and how your selection fits into your definition of criminality. Prepare a 5 minute presentation where you will show your selection to the class (video taped segments should not be over 3 minutes) and discuss why you chose it.

The following format may be useful for your brief presentation:

1. Discuss your definition of criminality
2. Describe the selection (ie why does it fit your concept of criminality).
3. Attempt to predict what will happen next.
4. Theorize: Why is it that way? What is the reason for it?
