RESOURCES FOR SUCCESS
"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit."
Why begin with these insightful words from Aristotle? I feel the need to take on the pervasive myth that some people are born smart while others might as well give up. As an educator and as someone who has been a student most of my life, I completely disagree. I believe that two keys to success are believing in yourself and being self-disciplined. Pertaining to the latter, what you do the most is what you will do best. Mike Montgomery, who coaches the Stanford men's basketball team, has his players practice certain skills and plays over and over again so that during crunch time, his players don't have to agonize over what to do. Instead, they shift into automatic. Clearly this technique works, for Stanford is ranked nationally this year. Much like playing a sport or a musical instrument, you learn best by constantly practicing. Solid "coaching" also helps; take advantage of my office hours and the resources in The Learning Center.
On this page I've compiled a variety of resources for your success. Please submit feedback to my e-mail, wongk@smccd.edu
